FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How does my son join Scouting and what does it cost?
Troop 175 has a standard intake of new Scouts rising from Webelos in February.  Your son can join at any time of the year as long as he meets joining requirements.  We do have annual standard fees as well as activity fees which are explained in our troop overview.

We just moved to the local area.

Can my son transfer his Scout membership from his old troop?

Transfer memberships are welcome.  You should complete a membership transfer form, pay a $1 transfer fee if national membership is current and be prepared to provide contacts to your former troop to facilitate a smooth transfer.

If my son earned rank and merit badges from his hometown troop can these achievements be transferred to the troop

All previously earned rank including merit badges may be transferred from your previous troop after completion of a membership transfer form.  Progress on incomplete merit badges may be reviewed by our merit badge counselors to assist your Scout in completing the badge.

Does my son need to purchase a scouting uniform?

Yes.  Troop 175 is a full uniformed troop.  The uniform is an important component of completing the Aims and Methods of Scouting.  Our troop committee does have an exchange closet of experienced uniforms to assist families in uniforming their Scout.   Our complete uniform standards are explained to families during new member reception.

What equipment should my son buy?

Our troop overview provides some equipment guidelines.  Our strongest suggestion is to ask one of our leaders first before purchase of expensive personnel gear to see if it will add practical value to your Scout's outdoor experience, or if the item is permitted in our program.  Some gear items are not permitted for safety or security reasons.

What does my son need to do in order to advance in scouting?

What is the key to success for my son as a scout?

He needs to live by the Scout Oath and Law.

He needs to have a genuine desire to succeed and to want to have fun.

Personal commitment.

Self-discipline.

Your underlying support to his efforts, but not doing his work for him.

Is the Scouting program the same as it was 20 years ago when I was young?

Scouting is still all about Outings, but the opportunities are significantly enhanced today in high adventure than before as more local councils have expanded their camping programs.

Will my son earn his Eagle Scout rank in your troop?

Tough question that only your son can answer with his participation record and earnest efforts over his Scouting career.   However, a majority (but not all) of Scouts who become a member of Troop 175 today are reaching Eagle Scout before their 18th birthday.  They do this because in part, they are having a great time with their friends and because they realize it is worth accomplishing.

How can I help?

We have many ways for volunteers to assist our program.  We are glad you asked.
