Uniforms

BSA has a newly designed Centennial Uniform for Boy Scouts and for adult leaders (including Cub Scout leaders) available beginning Aug. 15, 2008. The new uniform shirt is still khaki, but the slacks are forest green rather than olive green. All Boy Scouts will now wear forest green shoulder loops instead of red. The unit number and “trained” patches are forest green as are the new socks. The new uniform is composed of high-tech fabrics.  You can read a special publication about this new uniform.

Scouts may continue to wear the "Classic" uniform and are not required to purchase the new uniform. Scouts should not however mix and match the old and new uniform pants and shirts.

WHY WE WEAR UNIFORMS
The Boy Scouts of America has always been a uniformed body. There are many reasons for this. But one reason stands out above all the rest. We wear the uniform because it is a means of identifying ourselves openly with the principles to which we are committed- character development, citizenship training, and physical and mental fitness.

We stand together, not alone in encouraging others to live by these same principles. Scouts and adults alike should take pride in belonging to such a movement and wear the uniform as it is intended.    The uniform has changed greatly over the 100 years of Scouting in America.  You can find out more by reading this article From Doughboy Duds to Oscar de la Renta.

WHEN AND HOW TO WEAR THE UNIFORM
The official uniforms are intended primarily for use in connection with Scouting activities. They should be worn to all unit events, and may be worn to school, church, or any family function. The uniform should also be worn while participating in a money-earning project approved by the local council. The uniform may not be worn by either Scouts or adult leaders when:

  • Involved in any distinctly political endeavor
  • Appearing on the stage professionally without special approval from the National Executive Board
  • Taking part in parades, except when rendering service as a Scout or leader or when officially representing the Boy Scouts of America
  • Participating in demonstrations not authorized by the Boy Scouts of America

All uniforms, badges, and insignia of the Boy Scouts of America may be used only by members of the Boy Scouts of America who are registered and in good standing. No alteration of or addition to the official uniform, badges, or insignia, or the rules and regulations covering the wearing of the uniform, may be authorized by anyone except the National Executive Board. Badges awarded by organizations other than the Boy Scouts of America may not be worn on the official uniform. (Exceptions: Historic Trails Awards and religious emblems from P.R.A.Y.)
